Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Erica's first day was "absolutely astounding"

Absolutely Astounded

Hi everyone. My name is Erica Leib and I am a senior at UConn. I am studying Communications with a minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Just a few weeks after I come back from Cape Town, I will be returning to UConn to graduate in May. While my plans post graduation are ambiguous, I hope that my internship at Christel House will give me some clarity. Though I only learned about this program a few weeks prior to the deadline, I knew that it was an opportunity I could not pass up. Now that I am actually here, I could not be happier with my decision.

After a long day of travel, I was ecstatic to get off the plane and take in a deep breath of the Cape Town air. Though I could feel the cool breeze pass by me and see Table Mountain stand before me, I still struggled to process that I was really here. Reality set in as we then made our way to our respective homes. We first stopped at the house on Loch Road. I was shocked by how big and beautiful it was. It even comes with an in ground pool! After rooms were picked, we then headed over to where I would be living, on Malleson Road. While it is not as big as the other house, it is quaint and cozy. There might not be a pool, but I can certainly appreciate our adorable courtyard! After we spent a few hours unpacking and getting settled, we then made our way back to Loch for some pizza. Overall, the first day was filled with astonishment, excitement, and an eagerness to start my Cape Town journey.
