WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Janiel's certain she's where she belongs

Janiel settling in to her home away from home

As a quick introduction, my name is Janiel Green, sophomore at the University of Connecticut. On paper, I have a major in Allied Health Sciences, but I am more focused on Pharmacy. My career ambition is to become a Pediatric Pharmacist. I plan on focusing more on fieldwork rather than being behind a counter dressed in a white lab coat. I’ve always felt the need to get away from everything mainstream, and concentrate on areas that are not as glamorous. I am more than grateful to have been placed at the Maitland Cottage Hospital as my internship site while being here. Maitland is an orthopedic pediatric hospital, mainly funded by the government. Walking into the hospital for the first time definitely reassured me that I am on the right career path. Seeing beautiful children, although in pain from having bone surgery, smile from ear to ear, made me so overwhelmingly happy. I knew I was in the right place.

The city has been so intriguing and calling at the same time. Days have been long, the breeze has been cool and locals are more than welcoming, Cape Town is the place to be. As you walk, engulfed in mountains, you realize that mediocre issues are simply just mediocre. You begin to understand that we are all in South Africa for a purpose and you are guaranteed to leave a changed person.

I have never felt more secure within myself, and the decision I made a couple months ago about studying abroad in this amazing place. I remember feeling so drained after flying for 20 hours, but that was all washed away the minute we stepped out of Cape Town International Airport. The casual wind that surrounded us all almost made me cry. I could definitely feel that I was in Cape Town. Overall, I like the pleasant feeling the city eludes. I am certain that I am where I belong!
