WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Melissa learning history through personal accounts

Hi! My name is Melissa. I am a sophomore studying Human Development and Family Studies and Urban Youth and Families.  I created my own major to learn more about urban communities especially with regards to family structure and education. My primary academic interest is the achievement gap and along with that equal education which is why I know I definitely want to work in the education sector either with policy or school counseling when I graduate in May 2015. That is why I am so excited to be interning in the Cape Flats at City Mission EducationalServices (CMES)  which is an independent school for at risk and disadvantaged youth. The school combines mainstream education with therapeutic interventions to provide students with the resources they need to be successful.  I hope to be a great role model for the students and improve my mentoring and teaching skills. I cannot wait to get started!

So far this whole experience has been amazing. I've appreciated learning about the history of Cape Town and also enjoying the music! We could not have asked for a better introduction to such an amazing community and country! I am finding everyone so incredibly welcoming in Cape Town and I just love hearing stories from friends and tour guides. The personal accounts we have been privileged to hear have really helped to illustrate how amazing and heartfelt Cape Town is. I am beyond lucky to be here and I am so ready to explore internship placements and return to some of my favorite places from orientation for breaks and new experiences!
