WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Morgan elated, overwhelmed, inspired and hopeful

Morgan learning to drum
My name is Morgan Croce and I am an Allied Health Sciences Major. I plan on graduating from UConn in May of 2015, although I am technically a junior. After I graduate, I wish to attend a a Physician's Assistant post-graduate program, as well as enroll in a program to receive my Master's in Public Health. After I have gone through schooling I want to work as a Physician's Assistant in a multitude of underserved communities, as well as work for and lobby important public policy for the nation.

I will be working at the Tafelsig Healthcare Clinic which offer myself, as well as the other co-educators I will be working alongside, great exposure to the the healthcare field, especially in a greatly underserved Township. One of my goals this semester is to get involved in an activist project that has to do with HIV/AIDS prevention initiatives to gain exposure to how South Africa addresses and deals with a particular public health issue (here the HIV/AIDS epidemic).

I think the best words to describe how I'm feeling are elated, overwhelmed, and so so so excited for learning and trying to understand everything I don't know and have never thought about....there is just so much to learn, and I feel like South Africa is opening my eyes. I think Cape Town is astounding because after meeting so many people who are so positive, who have such strong faith in their religions, their people, their country, through all of the terrible, heart-wrenching, and difficult times that have occurred in the past and continue to happen, and because of that I am inspired and hopeful.
