Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Patrick happy to be here

Patrick & Jerard
Hi my name is Patrick Clarke and I am a sophomore Biology major and potential human rights minor. I plan on graduating in 2015 and after a couple years working as an EMT in the U.N. paramedics program, I want to go to Physician’s Assistant school. After that I hope to work in the Doctors Without Borders program working in overseas war-torn countries with under-privileged adults and children. In Cape Town, I will be working in the non-profit Tafelsig Medical clinic.
As soon as I got to Cape Town, I was more shocked than anything at the complete cultural divide driving from the airport to the house. I hadn’t made very many friends in the class but quickly that changed to me becoming great friends with my housemates. It is hard to get homesick in a beautiful house with beautiful and all around awesome individuals who are in the same exact situation as yourself. I became very involved with the people and the landscape of the country because I had never seen anything like this before. My best day so far was at the Elonwabeni Child and Family Centre which I loved because I got to play with kids which I really like doing. I hope to get to work with kids at Tafelsig because I am a firm believer in the correct upbringing of youth. All in all, I am very excited for next week and very happy to be here right now.
