Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Carolyn on what she is going to miss

10 Things I’m Going to Miss Most About Cape Town
As we approach our final month in South Africa, with excursion only a week away, I figured it was time to consolidate my favorite things about our trip thus far.
  1.               Mini Bus Taxis – they’re convenient, inexpensive and an adventure every time.
  2.        Perpetual beach weather – heading back to New England (even in April) will be a struggle.
  3.        Constantly having something to do – I’m bracing for four months of boredom.
  4.               Eastern Food Bazaar – this may be the most tragic loss…
  5.        Sense of community – so many marches, so little time.
  6.        Classes at UCT – who knew I’d ever attend a University prettier than UConn?
  7.        My fellow interns at Black Sash – a mini UN all sharing a table.
  8.        Group dinners – who doesn’t love going out in groups of 20+?
  9.        Table Mountain – I’ll never have a more gorgeous commute to work.
  10.        Living in a house with 19 other people – seriously… I will miss this.
