Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Erica, Melissa, Morgan & Wylie: "It gets better South Africa"

Erica, Melissa, Morgan & Wylie decided to participate in the "It gets better South Africa" project by making  a short video.

"It Gets Better South Africa" is a collection of videos, which discourage homophobic bullying. It promotes the Triangle Project Helpline (021 712 6699), a service for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth. It features a diverse group of high profile individuals and students from the University of Cape Town and Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria.

It Gets Better South Africa is available for free viewing at the Cape Town Holocaust Centre (www.holocaust.org.za) and online (www.youtube.com/itgetsbettersa).

It Gets Better South Africa is a local contribution to the It Gets Better Project (www.itgetsbetter.org), a non-profit organization in the US with more than ten international affiliates, each working to share messages of hope with LGBT learners around the world and supporting efforts to improve their lives.

For more information about It Gets Better South Africa, please email itgetsbettersa@gmail.com

Their message can be seen at:

They want youth in Cape Town to know if you're bullied on the basis of sexual orientation, call the Triangle Project Helpline 021 712 6699. It's a free and confidential service for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth in South Africa.
