WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Ethan on the need to rehumanize

A body.
it was wrapped in cloth
seen from behind the sheen of a bus window it laid there.

close enough to touch, yet miles away
my blinded eyes would not let me approach.

I weep.
I weep not just for loss of life.
Again not for the screaming faces of dread. I weep for the lack of grief. my lack.

for this scene is familiar
i have seen it a hundred times through the media. through the culture. through my blinded eyes. desensitized.

The bus window became a screen separating a fact from fiction.
is it real?
was it?

i must rehumanize myself.
until i live my life consciously
knowing that each of us bleed one deep red shade.
