WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Janiel: feeling the love

It was definitely weird being back at Blue Chip a second time after orientation week. All throughout the semester, I had been saying that it’s a good thing to revisit the places we had been throughout orientation week, because now you may notice new things or just see it with different eyes. I think about the first at Blue Chip and my feelings are certainly mixed. I think about it as a place with great karaoke and laughing with my friends, but I also think about it as the night when a couple people from the group got their personal things stolen, and the night Rashaad left. So I think walking back into Blue Chip, I had a rush of memories, especially since I hadn’t been there since the first week of the trip.

I realized how much an environment such as that can bring out so much joy in people. I really loved being with everyone from the group and just having innocent fun, while singing very horribly. It was very nice to see everyone in one spot, outside of classes. It had been very hard to get the entire group together previously. On that night I remember, sitting back and looking around the small room at all the faces that had come out that night. It gave me chills to see the happiness glow from everyone. The night was filled with singing, laughter and joy. I also remember not wanting the night to end, because we all were having so much fun doing karaoke together. But it did end. Then there was the bus ride home. Morgan came to sit next to me, and after a while the bus fell quiet. It gave me chills, because I knew that everyone had had a good night. At the time, words weren’t needed to express what we were feeling. After karaoke, we all realized how much we love being together as a big group, and enjoying one another’s company.
