Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

JR on learning to explore

During our pre-departure class, one of the things that the students from the previous year said was to accept that there are things you will not be able to do.  As we approach being in Cape Town for two months, I feel like the list of things I want to do has not gotten any shorter, all while seemingly doing a laundry list of things I couldn’t even fathom doing when I got here.  As the days tick by, I get more and more anxious as to all the things I still want to do while I’m here, and it’s something that I’m struggling to accept.  I am fairly proud of myself, as someone who back home who is adverse to going out and exploring, to really immersing myself in the Cape Town and trying to take up as many opportunities as I can in the short time that I’m here.  This willingness to go out and experience new things is something that I had hoped to gain while on this trip, and also hope to bring back with me to the United States.
