Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Kelsey's excursion helped sum up the trip

Kelsey enjoying time at the
Boys and Girls Club of Soweto
I think the week away on excursion really helped to sum up the trip and what I have been feeling. What we saw at the museums in Johannesburg really put into perspective what we have been learning about all semester. The Hector Pieterson memorial really had an affect on me. Just reading the stories and the quotes and the pictures really had a big impact. There was also a wall breaking down the events of June 16th 1976 hour by hour which really helped my understanding. It was just really difficult to believe until we actually got to the museum and saw everything for ourselves. Also, I wish we could have spent more time at the Apartheid museum. There was just so much to see and so little time. At the same time, I missed Cape Town so much while we stayed in Johannesburg. It makes me think about how I'm going to miss it when we go home to America. Our time at Kruger was truly an incredible opportunity. I still can't believe I am able to say I went on a safari in Africa. We saw elephants, lions, hippos, monkeys, rhinos, and my personal favorite a leopard. We also went on a walking tour, we didn't see much on it, but just walking around where all these exotic animals also walk was a treat in itself. Once again, I can't express how fortunate and grateful I am to be given the opportunity to be exposed to such a unique and special culture.
