Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Andrew things done ..... and things left to do

I’m scared that I only have about 6 weeks left and that every weekend is basically already planned out until I leave.  It has been amazing so far—my internship, the town, the history, the nightlife, and the community we live in.  Things I still want to do: get to know even more South Africans on a personal level and become comfortable advocating for things I know need to be done even though I don’t have all the facts.

I feel like I need to slow down and make the most of the rest of my time here before I have to return home.

Some interesting things I did over the last few weeks:

I went to an interesting lecture by one of the Minister of Health’s Advisory Board members for the National Health Insurance program, which is the health care reform program in South Africa.

I went to a very cool restaurant called Mama Africa where I ate a platter of all the different types of wild game, including crocodile, springbok, and kudu while listening to live African music.  I also went to a great seafood restaurant called the Harbour House in Kalk’s Bay.

Also, a member of the local synagogue invited me over for dinner after services on a Friday night.  This member, before he moved back to South Africa, ironically used to be in the same cardiology practice as my friend’s father back home in Connecticut…the world is such a small place.
