WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Brianna on finding your passion

At the end of the day, we are all working towards something. We each start off life’s journey with a dream in mind. Now for some, these dreams seem more attainable than others but nonetheless they all start off as dreams.

A dream is simply something we think of that has yet been applied to this real world we live in. For some of us, applying this dream to reality is an easier task than for others. But for many of us, it is easy to get lost in the attempts of achieving our dreams. We lose focus of what motivated us in the first place. As a result, you see people who are in fields that they don’t have passion about.

I think it’s important to talk about passion. I say this because we all have it. For some, we might not be able to think off the top of our heads what our passions are, but deep down under, they are there. They are patiently waiting to be put to use. Therefore, it’s important to find a career in which your passions can be expressed because then you as a person will be happier! You will actually find pleasure in going to work and you will find purpose to your career. If you are passionate about something, you will be more motivated to work harder in that field and express all your potential. Therefore you are bettering yourself and others simply by doing something that you are passionate about.

For people who don’t know their passion, I would encourage them to find it. It’s important to incorporate an outlet for your passion to be expressed through. Maybe it won’t be through your job, but have it present within your life. We must make room in your life for whatever we are truly passionate about.

For me, what makes me passionate is motivating youth. I find happiness in guiding young adults because they are at the age that they absorb so much around them and constantly change as people. I also believe that although they might struggle with listening, they are still paying attention to everything around them. When you are a teenager, you are learning how to become an adult and you need role models to influence this transformation that happens. I want to be a mentor for youth, especially in inner-cities because I know that many children are lacking it. But I believe there is hope and hope doesn’t discriminate. So, I am hopeful that our youth will contribute to improving the world we live in and I want to make them realize just how much they are capable of.
