WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Morgan's newest goal

I hate the media. There is no other way to say what I have come to realize and it is that I despise the media. I wish it didn’t exist. We are a society controlled by everything we read and everything we see. Hey I actually used to believe those Dove ads about women being beautiful on their own and we’re all naturally beautiful, until I found out the company that owns Dove is the same company that owns Axe, a male body product line with ridiculously sexualized advertisements. So what’s real?!?! I find myself getting angrier and angrier with the media while watching the way news teams have been reporting the attacks at the Boston Marathon. I was watching CNN yesterday and the news station has taken to calling the incident ‘Terror in Boston’ and I just went to the website to see that the top three stories are all about Boston. My question is what about the rest of the world? What about Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town where there are shootings daily right down the street from where I work? These news groups are giving the attack a label, they are branding the incident to draw more hysteria around it and most importantly on their list, to gain the most viewers. These stations don’t really care about what they’re reported, as long as it’s the biggest and most radical story it can be to get viewers! I can confidently say one of my newest goals since taking Marita’s class this semester is to question everything I see.
