I hate the media. There is no other way to
say what I have come to realize and it is that I despise the media. I wish it
didn’t exist. We are a society controlled by everything we read and everything
we see. Hey I actually used to believe those Dove ads about women being
beautiful on their own and we’re all naturally beautiful, until I found out the
company that owns Dove is the same company that owns Axe, a male body product
line with ridiculously sexualized advertisements. So what’s real?!?! I find
myself getting angrier and angrier with the media while watching the way news
teams have been reporting the attacks at the Boston Marathon. I was watching
CNN yesterday and the news station has taken to calling the incident ‘Terror in
Boston’ and I just went to the website to see that the top three stories are
all about Boston. My question is what about the rest of the world? What about
Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town where there are shootings daily right down the
street from where I work? These news groups are giving the attack a label, they
are branding the incident to draw more hysteria around it and most importantly
on their list, to gain the most viewers. These stations don’t really care about
what they’re reported, as long as it’s the biggest and most radical story it
can be to get viewers! I can confidently say one of my newest goals since
taking Marita’s class this semester is to question everything I see.
