Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Andrew keen to gain experience in desired field of study

I'm very excited about being accepted to the Cape Town program.  I believe this program will challenge me in new ways and give me a first hand taste of my future career.  I want to practice medicine and then be involved in making, shaping, or influencing healthcare reform policy.  Our American healthcare system cannot be sustained because of its excessive cost.  But in order to enact meaningful reform, more physician voice needs to be heard--not just those of politicians and CEOs; if physicians voice isn't heard, they will never buy into the changes and healthcare reform won't effectively happen.  That's what I hope to do someday, and my proposed internship with a well-regarded surgeon who's influential in health policy will allow me to gain experience in my desired field and challenge me to learn (and / or accept?) that the American way of providing healthcare isn't necessarily the best (or only way of doing so).

Besides my internship / academic components, I'm excited to actually live in another culture--not just visit another culture. I also can't wait to go on all the exciting adventures I heard previous students talk about.
