WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Carolyn still waiting for reality to hit

My name is Carolyn Boylan and I am a political science major and a psychology minor in the honors program at the University of Connecticut. I expect to graduate in the spring of 2014. I am still undecided about what I would like to do as a future career, but as of right now my plan is to go to law school after I graduate college. After taking a human rights class last semester I have become much more interested in pursuing a career in human rights and international law. This is why I am very excited to be working with Black Sash for my internship; they work to protect and promote social and economic rights in South Africa which is something I would be very interested in as a future career.

After being in Cape Town for almost a week now I would say that reality hasn’t really hit me yet. Since we are still doing a lot of touristy activities this trip still seems like more of a vacation than where we’re living for the next 3 ½ months. I think once we start classes and the internships everything will become more real. As for Cape Town itself, it’s absolutely beautiful. I keep having to stop to take pictures even when doing the most mundane activities (like shopping or hanging out at the house). If this first week is any indication of what’s to come, I am very excited.
