Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Carolyn pooling knowledge to become better informed

After beginning my internship this week, things are becoming much more real. Finally having aset schedule to follow is making Cape Town seem less like a vacation spot and more like my new home for the semester. I’m loving this change; as much as I enjoyed every trip we took during orientation, I’m starting to feel like I’m not a tourist anymore (even though I still don’t really know where anything is). I’m also getting better at using the mini bus taxis which has definitely made me feel more like a Capetonian, although I have already had some interesting experiences (I know how to get to Parow now).

As for my internship, itself, I am very excited for what’s to come this semester. So far we have only begun to catch up on all the laws and programs of South Africa and I’m soaking it all up. I can’t wait to be able to use the knowledge that I gain here to really try to make a difference (big or small). I also feel like I’m learning so much from other people’s internships as well. Hopefully we can all pool our knowledge to make one well-rounded and better informed group of students.
