Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

For Carolyn time's going way too fast

For Carolyn time is moving way too fast
It’s now been over 3 weeks in Cape Town (working towards the 1 month marker) and it’s going by way too fast; I’m already starting to stress about leaving. I actually got distraught during class when we talked about planning the symposium next year. But aside from my irrational (and way too early) fears of leaving, my time in Cape Town is already proving to be an unbelievable experience. I was so excited to start classes last week and I already love them all. I am especially looking forward to more of Vincent’s class; we are constantly hearing bits and pieces of South African history from the people we meet and the places we visit, it would be really nice to have a stronger background on the subject. After only one 2 ½ hour class, I feel significantly more informed and I’m thrilled by how relevant all of this history is to everyday life in Cape Town. As for Vernon class, our first meeting was really enlightening and I enjoy hearing how other people have been experiencing this trip. I’ve actually had an easier time identifying my own emotions surrounding this trip by listening to other people describe theirs. Finally Marita’s class has been really interesting, I love discussions of race and equality and I’m really excited to have more discussions in the future.
