Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Morgan on being welcomed to Ocean View

This past weekend we spent Thursday through Sunday in a community called Ocean View, arranged through a program that can be found here:
http://www.volunteermzansiafrika.com/home-stay/.

During my stay, I learned that Ocean View is the type of place full of hidden secrets. From the outside looking in I remember being a little concerned with where we would be spending our weekend. Chantel, the woman who organized our trip, had continually warned us about dressing appropriately, i.e. wearing pants and no shorts, to keep our bags and cameras with us at all times, and general safety precautions. I remember feeling concerned on Thursday when we had arrived at our destination. What I remember feeling on Sunday is sadness- to be leaving such a welcoming and close-knit community that really felt like home. Ocean View is the type of place that welcomes visitors with open arms and is causing my heart to fight with my mind to figure out when I can go back.
