WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Morgan on being sick in a foreign country

Being sick in a foreign country is very interesting. It's interesting for me because I work in a healthcare clinic, so I know what goes into giving people proper treatment and dealing with their needs…but I haven't been on the other side of South African treatment until this week. The doctors and the nurses here are so helpful, and possibly more kindhearted than what I have experienced in the US. So what was difficult for me was being alone while receiving all this treatment. Usually when I'm very sick or end up in the ER, I have my mom with me. This week was the first time since I've been on the trip where I really missed my mom. I needed her to hold my hand while I got that IV, and to help me understand the names of the injections I didn't know. But these trips to the doctors and being sick has made me a stronger person, because I'm learning my independence and how to really take care of myself.
