WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Ethan finding inspiration in the people he meets

Ethan in Khayelitsha surrounded by the boys from the Fire Fighters Football Club
As the my time here goes by I find more excuses to stay in Khayelitsha more often. Over the past week 6 out of the 7 days I have found my way to this township, and each day I receive joy and life out of my time there. By helping out with and documenting the Fire Fighters Football Club, I have found a way to spend significantly more time there. A Football Club unlike any other, this organization not only teaches the youth to play a sport, but they instill in them life skills they can use for the rest of there life. They make sure their players study and strive to do well in school. This organization is co-coached by two of the most inspirational people I have met while in South Africa. Bongi and Power. Both have more enthusiasm, devotion and dedication than I could ever hope to obtain. This is why I am excited for this fascinating project. By interviewing these amazing people, I can show the people of UCONN and the world their joy and their ability to give time, energy and resources without expecting anything in return. I will consider myself a lucky man if I could capture a fraction of the excitement that comes with each practice, each game, and each goal in my film.
