WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Lindsay on surfing

As I promised earlier, I’m now going to share my first surfing story! So Saturday morning my roommate Wylie and I decided to try to surf for the first time. We left with the same goal of becoming sufficient surfers while being here but both ran into obstacles that prohibited from starting this goal earlier. So Saturday was the day! We got up early(ish) and got the train so we could make it to the beach for high tide which is supposedly the best time for first timers. I’m not quite sure what makes it the easiest time for learning, but I definitely still had my fair share of struggles.

We went into the shop to get boards and suits for an hour rentals and when we walked into the store asking for rentals they seemed to hang on our words waiting to hear ‘And lessons’ but those words never came! After not hearing what they expected they asked, ‘No lessons?’ to which we confidently said no. Again, ‘You sure you don’t want instructions?’, ‘We’re positive!’ They finally shrugged, showed us where we could change into our wetsuits and they let us on our way! On a rather windy day, it was even hard to just get to the beach, with such large boards and gusts of wind it was hard to control the board. I knew I was off to a good start when I had trouble just making it to the water.

Once finally on the beach we strapped our boards to our ankles and just got in the water! When we had been on the beach before we had seen countless lessons happening. I had the general gist – paddle and then stand up! Should be easy. Just kidding. I knew what lie ahead was going to be incredibly challenging, and it was! But so much fun! In fact I’ve made a pact with myself to do it once a week. My failure is what hooked me on this new activity! I was able to ride in on waves on my knees, but the few times I made it unto my feet I fell off moments later. It was frustrating and invigorating. When anyone asked me how it went I would tell them I was awful, it was awesome! I would love to come back home with a new skill and I’m going to leave hopefully a mediocre surfer!

There are so many more fun experiences that I want to have but the countdown clock is starting to tick pretty loudly. Officially more than halfway into the trip it’s so weird to think that I’m going to be leaving here in just 2 or so months time. I’m working quickly to check off my list of things that I have left to do and am hoping I can get to all of them!
