WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Morgan's passion or life

My passion for life stems from my desire to help people, and one of the most enjoyable parts of life (for me) is listening to people tell their story. To me, medicine is an outlet where I can listen to a person explain why they are feeling sick or have a certain problem, and ultimately share with me a part of their story. I love medicine because my role is very interesting – the patient is required to tell me their ailment in order to get treatment, and because of who I am, I feel this necessity to rise up and show the patient that yes, you can trust me with your story and yes I really do want to help you. What’s interesting is I understood the philosophy of the doctor as treating the illness or the problem more so than the patient, and this is exactly what I do not want to do. I want to treat my patients like human beings and help them in the best way possible.
