Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Kelsey appreciating the kindness she's received and hoping to pass it on

Walking confidently toward her future.
As the days get colder, our days here in Cape Town are decreasing. If you asked me two weeks ago, I would have told you I was scared to go home and back to the rush of things. Although I still don't want to go home, I feel as though I'm ready. I have a clearer sight of what I do and don't want. I knew before this trip I wanted to go into the medical field, but now I feel as though I have experienced why and how rewarding it is. I know already I'm going to miss the clinic. I'm already in a comfortable routine. In the mornings I help in family planning with Sister Hoole then usually once all those patients have been seen, I have the luxury of skipping around from shadowing to bandaging to blood drawing. We are all so close here it's almost unimaginable that we will most likely never see them again. I will never forget belly dancing classes with our manager, Shakira, or random gifts from Sister Castle, or going to McDonalds with Dr. Girran. All of these things are just wonderful memories to keep. The warmth and kindness they have shown us in this foreign land will never be forgotten or unappreciated. I hope to someday foster at least half the kindness they have shown us.
