Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Tekowa on the District 6 Museum

A while back I went to the District 6 Museum with the SPP youth group. I just came across some of my notes from that day and would like to share some of the quotes that I wrote down…

“It struck me that our history is contained in the homes we live in, tat we are shaped by the ability of these simple structures to resist being defiled.” –Achmat Dangor (Kafka’s Curse)

Questioning Eyes (a poem by a former resident of District 6)
Its sad
The situation is so bad
That when we meet
In this dark street
We size each other up
With cautious, questioning eyes
-Peter E Clarke

“District 6 was a very poor community but their dreams were big.”

“There is a poverty of imagination because peoples spirits have been broken.”

What has continued to strike me about South Africa is that there is so much pain in their history but yet so much resiliency and in many cases, so much forgiveness. Its this kind of forgiveness that blows me away because so many people have every right
