WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Audrey...pure happiness!

The day I found out I got accepted into the Cape Town study abroad program was a bit ironic, everyone always says with the good comes the bad. Within a five-minute time span I was enlightened with my acceptance and then informed I had strep. In one moment I was experiencing a state of pure bliss and the next I was experiencing a state of pain. I sent my best friend a text, “Two things: I have strep and I got accepted!!!!!!!!!!” I was sure to share the most important and exciting news for last, so instead of dwelling on the bad I lightened it up with the news I had been patiently waiting on for a week. I called my mom next, quickly explained I had strep and the process I would have to go through to get rid of it and then I went quiet for a second and said, “but on a better note I heard back from study abroad.” And from there on out it wasn’t even like I was sick because everything else was just so perfect. In less than three months I would be on a flight to South Africa to begin a new chapter in my life for the next three and a half months. Pure happiness
