WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Brianna: Going to South Africa just feels right!

After finding out I have been accepted into the Cape Town Study Abroad program, I couldn't help but think of how much I will grow as a person after having visited South Africa. I have always felt that the people who studied abroad got a new perspective on the world that everyone else could not understand without having experienced it themselves. I keep thinking about everything that I want to do in Africa and about my internship which makes me even more excited because it is directly related to what I want to become involved with once I graduate from the University of Connecticut. I keep thinking how this is a great way to end my four years of undergraduate studies by doing something new and exciting. I can't wait for the feeling when I come back from Africa and take what I’ve learned to impact lives here in the United States.

I am sincerely so excited to go abroad this coming semester and interacting with the community in South Africa makes my heart smile. I want to come back to the states feeling that I have made a difference no matter how big or small. I am also so excited to learn about Human Rights abroad, especially with the history of South Africa. Everything about South Africa just feels right and I can't wait to embark on this new journey!
