WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Elise has been waiting for this day

My heart has been set on studying abroad in Cape Town for a year now. Naturally—and like everyone else—I am so excited to be accepted to the program. But personally, I also feel like this is the natural resolution to a long period of waiting. For quite some time I have been thinking and talking about South Africa, asking people who have gone in previous years everything about it, and convincing my parents to let me go. Cape Town has gone from being a goal for the distant future to a reality. Though until now I could never be 100% sure that I would be in Cape Town this spring, it has felt like a fact of life nonetheless.
So naturally when I heard that this year many people applied and it was one of the most competitive study abroad programs at UConn, I got a little worried. The prospect of being waitlisted or rejected made me realize just how invested I really am: if that had happened, I would have been heartbroken. Luckily, that wasn’t the case. Some of my excitement may be overshadowed by relief, but all the same I couldn’t be more thrilled or proud to be a part of this trip.
