Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Larissa anticipating the time of her life

“You have been accepted!” Am I reading this e-mail correctly?  Did I really get in?  I’m going to South Africa!  I re-read my acceptance e-mail probably 10 times before it actually hit me that I’d be getting the chance of a lifetime in just a few months.  What do I need to pack?  How many people am I living with?  Where will my internship be?  I sat there in my lecture hall of 200 students silently grinning ear to ear as I continued to re-read this exciting e-mail.  It took everything in me to keep myself composed, sit there quietly, and not start clapping my hands together in excitement.

I can’t remember the last time I felt so genuinely excited about something.  How amazing, that while everyone else is taking class on campus in Connecticut, I’ll be studying at the University of Cape Town and working with children in South Africa.  I immediately began to think of all the sightseeing I’d be doing and the amazing people I’d meet throughout my time there.  I don’t know where I’ll be living, who I’ll be with, or where I’ll be working, but I do already know that this is going to be the time of my life.
