Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Kelsey cannot be more grateful

I still cannot believe I’m going to South Africa in 4 months and I cannot be more ready. I immediately made a million phone calls and posted on all social networks possible. My friend who went on the trip previously kept telling me it was the best experience she’s ever had and looking at her pictures makes me believe her. I think what I’m most excited for is working in the clinic and helping and meeting people who are so unlike me. I know I’ll probably never get an experience like this again so I plan on making the most of it. I am an Allied Health junior with hopes of becoming a physician assistant. I think this trip will show me a whole other side to the medical field and only motivate me even more to pursue a career in the medical field and help others.

Cape Town is the farthest I will have ever gone from home and although I know there will be challenges and maybe some homesickness, I know what I will get from it will be far more rewarding and fulfilling. From my knowledge of Cape Town, it has much history and story behind it. I think it gives the country that much more personality and I look forward to learning more about it during our classes at the University of Cape Town.  I also cannot wait to experience the climate and the animals that are so different to us here in America. Everyone I tell that I’m going cannot believe it either. Most people do not get an opportunity like this and I cannot be more grateful
