Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Melissa is ready for the challenge

The only things that make me truly happy are traveling and helping people! I'm So Ready for Cape Town 2013!

When I found out that I got accepted to this program I was so excited! I guess I called my mom first and posted on Twitter. Which is pretty normal for me when something exciting happens. It was such a relief. I was so happy and immediately I started planning!  I have been looking forward to this since last spring semester. I started my application in the summer then I went away to Uganda for seven weeks on a service trip. When I came back all I was certain of was that I couldn't wait to get back to Africa! This semester I changed my major and joined some new clubs. I felt lost but intrigued. There were so many outstanding opportunities available to me and I was so ready to dive into everything. I was reserved though, I thought it all through.  But one thing I was sure about was that I wanted to see a different part of Africa and perform more meaningful service. I cannot find a better thing in my life right now than my connection to service. I am really truly happy when I am helping other people and making a difference. That's why I am working to earn a great education and go out in the word and do service forever. I have dreams of Teach for America and Peace Corps someday!! But right now, this program feels natural and just so exciting! I have to get used to saying "I am going to Cape Town next semester!" which is CRAZY, but I am so pleased and eager to be part of this program and to get to work with such motivated and like minded peers. This is going to be so incredible and amazing and I trust that we will all have the most memorable and life changing experience of our lives! I  am ready for the challenge and I am more excited than ever to learn and live in Cape Town!
