WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Patrick could not be more ready.

It’s been exactly a week since I’ve been accepted to the UConn in Cape Town program and I’m still kind of in shock. Two weeks ago today, I still didn’t know where I wanted to study abroad. I had pretty much been set on the University of Wollongong program in Australia since April. But for the past month, many different people had informed me about the UConn in Cape Town program. So finally, two days before the deadline, I decided to really start looking into it. I finished everything I needed to the day the application was due. Now I am accepted and going to South Africa and it all seems so surreal. I have always wanted to travel to Africa and help people that cannot help themselves, and so this program really just fit my personality.

I’m also very excited to actually meet all of the people I’m going with. The first meeting we had with everyone I was a little overwhelmed by the girl to guy ratio. But how I like to think of it is as long as I’m meeting people I wouldn’t have met before, and having an experience of a lifetime, nothing can replace this feeling. I’m nervous, excited, and still in awe that I get to experience this; and I could not possibly be more ready.
