WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Carolyn still so much to do

As many on the trip already know, my sister had her baby on February 15th at 2:13pm (EST), making me an aunt for the first time. His name is Blake and he is tiny and adorable. Although this is amazing news and I’m so happy for my family, this is the first time that I’ve really felt 8,000 miles from home. Living in New Hampshire and going to school in Connecticut, I’m used to not seeing my family during the semester but I never realized how comforting it was to have the option. This experience has made me really miss my family, but really appreciate them, as well. At the same time, this has shown me how many great relationships I have developed here on this trip; everyone has been so happy for me and it makes me feel like I’m not so isolated and far away. I’ve also really come to appreciate the fact that I am one of the first people home from internships every day, it means that I have great wifi for a couple hours and I even got to Skype the baby yesterday J.

As for Cape Town, my experiences just keep getting better. I have felt so busy all the time which gets to be a bit stressful but I feel like I’m really not missing out on anything. This past weekend I visited The Old Biscuit Mill and even hiked Table Mountain, two things that I have been so looking forward to from this trip. But as I check more and more items off my list of things to do, I realize how much closer we are getting to the end. This is such a bittersweet feeling, I am so excited to get home and meet my nephew and see my family, but I’m dreading having to leave this amazing city. I am hoping to be able to put these feelings aside and live in the present for the rest of our trip, I don’t want anything to damper my experience; there’s still so much left to do.
Carolyn taking it all in
