Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Aimee on fun weekends and family reunions

On Monday, February 25 after a day at our internships, a group of us scurried to get ready for a hike up Lion’s Head for the sunset and full moon! The hike up was so beautiful and the sun was still beating down on us. We could see the city, the bays, and Para gliders.  It was a steep hike and there were even chains and ladders in some spots of the climb. Luckily we all made it to the top and were speechless at what we could see. The top was very crowded probably because it was a full moon. As the sun was setting, the moon was rising and the city lights were sparkling below us. Hiking down the mountain was also quite an experience because we were using the moon and our phones as lights to guide us down. Looking up you could see a trail of white lights tricking down the mountain as hikers made the descent. At some points along the trial down we had to wait in lines and keep reminding ourselves that we were still on a mountain. I will never forget this breath-taking experience enjoying nature’s beauty. The best things in life are free. I am looking forward to doing more hikes before I leave Cape Town.

This past weekend was packed with fun- maybe even too much fun. On Friday I went shopping in Claremont then went to a Skrillex concert that night. I have never danced for such a long period of time. We arrived at the Ostrich Farm at 7:00 and little did we know he wasn’t coming on until 12:30 after 4 or 5 other DJs. By that time some fans were no longer in the “Skrillex” mood. The Holi One Festival on Saturday was also a line up of DJs and everyone got covered in layers of vibrantly colored powder. I ate Shwarma and a taste of Bunny Chow at the Eastern food bazaar before entering into the colorful crowd. I felt bad for the taxi driver who had to drive us home after Holi but I gave him a tip for the powdery mess. The looks on people’s faces as we walked down the street to our house were priceless. Saturday night was a Kicks on Smash charity concert and one of our very own Uconn students did an opening rap for one of the other artists at the show. Once again we danced the night away. Unfortunately I didn’t find the energy to go to the Goldfish concert Sunday evening but I heard that was an amazing show too. It was such a busy weekend and dancing for two days straight took a toll on me, but it was totally worth it.

My parents have officially arrived in Cape Town! To anyone reading this blog who sent hugs my way, please know I have received them all from my mother. Thank you very much!! I hope they enjoy Cape Town as much as I do. I would be stressed out if I only had 10 days to explore this country because even I won’t get to do everything I want to do in 4 months. I was hoping they wouldn’t be too worried when they heard I had lost my voice over the weekend from being at concerts with friends. I told them that not all weekends were like that but I just LOVE dancing and going to concerts, and I guess getting too excited every now and then.
