WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Erica's excitement for her activist project

Involvement with The Clothing Bank

This past Friday I was finally able to officially determine my activist project! A few posts back, I mentioned how I was able to go on meetings with the social workers of Christel House. One meeting I was fortunate enough to sit on was with The Clothing Bank. TCB is a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower women by teaching them entrepreneurial skills. The Clothing Bank was started in response to the growing numbers of unemployment amongst single mothers. This organization has an Enterprise Development Programme, which is a 2-year holistic training program that empowers unemployed mothers to start small retail trading businesses. Major retailers in South Africa, such as Woolworths or Edgars, contribute to this program by donating excess clothing. In just 2 years, the Clothing Bank has assisted over 200 women in becoming financially independent and starting their own businesses! It’s not entirely certain yet what I will be doing, but I can’t wait to get involved with this incredible organization.
