Welcome to Our Blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in this program will attest, there are no words or pictures that can begin to adequately capture the beauty of the scenery or hospitality of the people in Cape Town. Therefore, this blog is merely intended to provide an overview of the program and a glimpse at some amazing adventures and life-changing experiences had by the students and staff of this program who have traveled together as co-educators and companions on the journey. As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor since 2008 it has been a privilege and honor to accompany an incredible variety of wonderful UConn students to a place we have all come to know and love.

In peace, with hope, Marita McComiskey, PhD

Liz on her excellent adventurous week

Last week was an excellent week for several different reasons.

Monday: Hiked Lion’s Head for the full moon. This was freakin awesome! Not only to see the city from up high at night but to be able to hike down with the light of the moon guiding your way was pretty epic. This combined with good conversation (see previous blog post) made the hike down even more entertaining. I highly recommend this hike for anyone, pretty much an easy hike, it just may more time for some.

Tuesday: I had the most amazing day at work. A huge aspect of loveLife is their peer educator program that trains “groundBreakers” to work in schools as educated leaders. On Tuesday I was fortunate enough to go on a adventure with an RPL (regional program leader- the guy (Khaya) in charge of several different gBs in a certain area). Khaya is in charge of the Hout Bay area, my second favourite place in Cape Town to Muizenberg…for the time being. So we went to a High School In Hout Bay, drove around Chapman’s Peak stopping along the way to take in the views and get food to get to Steenberg and Wynberg where we saw another High School and a clinic where loveLife does it’s stuff. It was beautiful and awesome because none of us had cameras or phones with us so we were forced to just take it in, and we tots looked like locals, which in my opinion is always a plus. Fabulous day, and it was all work related which made it twice as exciting – it is possible to have fun while you work!

Wednesday: Today I got assigned my project for the rest of the semester for my internship. Work again but SO exciting! I will be doing a feasibility analysis of our Langa Y-Centre to determine whether or not it is still viable/ what improvements should be made or whether it should be shut down. Big things! And I look forward to diving head first into that.

Thursday: Classes

Friday: I spent the day shadowing two gBs at Hout Bay High and got a first hand insight to the way the school works or don’t work… in certain areas here. I watched a lady with white skin preach to a bunch of high school students like they were two year olds, witnessed a fight, bought food from a restaurant that was made out of a container, saw kids drinking on school property, some sick break dancing, and someone come out all in the matter of 6 hours. Woah. Intense.

Saturday: Slept in! Then went to the Gay Pride Parade in town where I saw the most beautiful men I have ever seen and then covered myself in colourful powder at the Holi Day festival.  I’ve never had so much fun getting so incredible dirty! It was also beautiful to see how everyone started to look alike as we all got covered in more and more colour. I felt a bit like an avatar, I don’t know why it’s just the way I felt. Another, awesome day!

Sunday: I took today to go on an adventure! I ended up going alone because a lot of people had work to do. Perks of productivity! So I missed my train but it was fine because it gave me some time to read in the shade and then when I got to the beach I decided to go a different route than we usually go. We always go out of the train and go left so today I went right and found myself on a long and beautiful walk.
